Baptism has been with us for many centuries. We remember John the Baptist and Jesus’ own baptism. Yet references to baptism seem to have almost disappeared in liturgy until the great resurgence of the celebration of the importance of baptism in today’s church services. As service planners, we are reminded to use the Thanksgiving for Baptism in our services, and to keep the font at a prominent place in the church at all times, not just when there happens to be a baptism. The Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays in Lent, beginning with the story of the woman at the well, emphasize baptismal reflection during the final days of preparation before baptism at Easter. As we journey toward that end, on March 23rd this year, we are reminded that Jesus comes to us as living water, bringing God’s mercy and forgiveness.
In the last Parish Visitor, mention was made of the journey of Lent. Now we look forward to The Three Days which follow closely Palm Sunday. If you look at your new ELW hymnal, starting with page 256, you will find specific liturgies for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Vigil of Easter. The latter three services are part of “The Three Days”. They are to be considered as one unit. You will note that no postlude music is used on those days until Easter. This is one of the ways in which we feel that each of the days is a continuation of the previous one. As in all of our Lenten services, elaborate music is kept to a minimum until the glorious music of Easter. There are several hymns used specifically during these three days and are so designated beginning with ELW # 344 and ending with #359. You might be interested in looking at those and reflecting on the words.
Easter is usually thought to be in the early breezes of the spring season, so it is a little difficult to be thinking of Easter since it is so early this year. Still, preparations are being made throughout St. Peter’s for decorating of the altar, preparing the breakfast, setting up the services, preparing the sermons, preparing the music. While we stand in awe of the solemnity of the Three Days, we longingly wait for the glorious Easter celebration. We wish you continued blessings as you prepare your hearts for the living waters of baptism in the person of the Risen Lord.
To God be the Glory!
