St. Peter's History
This 1993 tribute was compiled in 1993 by Diane Enebak, Phyllis Swanson (arrangements), and Ardy Koehler (photos).
The original tribute as it was written in 1993:
In the summer of 1893 a small group of enthusiastic Danes began to worship and carry on their Danish traditions together in Northfield, Minnesota. They formally organized as St. Peter's Lutheran Church on November 12, 1893, in rented facilities. Twenty-eight adults signed the charter. The next year the church was purchased for $500.00. The building today serves as the Northfield Arts Guild stage.
Those original twenty-eight members have grown to 1,303 baptized members in today's congregation as we celebrate 100 years. It must be a very special time for those in our present congregation who are direct descendants of the first twenty-eight members. Their roots are very deep!
In 100 years there have been many changes and we have shared good times and endured hard times together. We have gained and lost. We once shared a close relationship with a sisters congregations, Immanuel's in Hazelwood and St. John's in Farmington. That first church that is now the NAG theatre was bursting at the seams and on April 10, 1960 we proudly and joyfully moved into our present facility, located at 418 Sumner Street in Northfield, Minnesota. Much of the work that was done on this current building was done by the talented and hard working volunteers of our congregation. To top it off, the twenty year mortgage was paid in 13 years!
We have shared good times through the years welcoming new pastors and new members in that traditional Lutheran style, the "pot luck," complete with lefse, hot dish and red jello! We sang with joy when we dedicated our new pipe organ in 1983 and rejoiced at the completion of our education wing in 1988. We have all marveled as we watch our very special "LUV" ladies turn out over two hundred hand-made quilts each year to be given away. Our very active Senior Fellowship is often envied as they share good times and fellowship (They seem to have more energy than most younger folks!) Our youth especially enjoy God's creation as they paddle canoes in the boundary waters or careen down mountain slopes! St. Peter's Adult Education program is outstanding. Each year our annual booklet lists Sunday forums from September to May! There are groups that meet to cover everything from Bible Studies to social concerns.
We have also shared the sad times. Much loved pastors and their families have left us and we have said good-bye to many talented and active members when they have moved away. Of course the most sad times are the deaths of loved ones. Yet, we rally together to celebrate their lives and all they have given to St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
