Blessing of the Animals 10/3

Why do we Bless our Animals?

Saint Francis of Assisi believed that nature itself is the mirror of God. He called all creatures his “brothers” and “sisters,” and allegedly preached to the birds. He is the founder of the Franciscan Order and the Poor Clares - both groups devoted to the care of those in need. His birthday in 1181 or 1182 is unknown, but his death date is October 3rd and so he is celebrated by recognizing his brothers and sisters, the animals, on this day.

Catholics and Anglicans have used this date to celebrate our relationships with animals for many years. Lutherans have adopted this custom in recent years because it is a wonderful way for us to celebrate the pets who bring us joy, the livestock which provides us with income, and the animal products which nourish our bodies. In addition, this celebration recognizes that some of us best encounter God through nature and creature - and both are absent from our more usual rituals.

Please bring your pets to be blessed, in crates or on leashes as appropriate, under the portico on October 3rd at 6:15pm. This will be our worship service for the evening.

Come early for supper!

At 5:30 pm, we share in a meal every Wednesday evening and the whole community is welcome! Don't worry about cooking, bring yourself and the kids for Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and Soup this week, 10/3! Supper includes a vegetable/salad and beverage and dessert. Free will offering is appreciated.
